Heat-Related Illness

Why is it affected by climate change?

Heat-related illnesses spiked in 2006 following one of their biggest heatwaves in history. Around 140 deaths occurred between July 15th and August 1st. Some of the illnesses that are caused by large amounts of heat are heart attacks, lung disease, strokes, dehydration, diabetes, and acute kidney failure. Increased temperatures are also causing more mental health-related emergency room visits for violence and self-harm. Economically challenged people are a main target for heat-related illnesses because they do not have access to resources to protect themselves from such circumstances as the more affluent residents.

How is it impacting the West Coast?

This is affecting the west coast because heatwaves that are common in California are becoming more and more frequent because climate change is making the temperatures rise which is causing more and more heatwaves. These diseases caused by the effects of climate change can lead to severe injuries and death.
